Recovering from a traumatic brain injury (TBI) can be a long and challenging journey. After a series of Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) treatments resulted in a TBI, I embarked on a road filled with medical opinions, tests, and treatments. Over 16 months later, I've learned that recovery requires a multi-faceted approach. This includes not only medical care and therapies but also nutritional support to promote brain healing and cognitive recovery.
In addition to physical therapy, neuro-optometry, and mental health counseling, I've researched and experimented with various supplements and therapies that might support brain healing. These options have been essential in my recovery, helping to reduce inflammation, improve cognitive function, and promote brain regeneration. In this post, I share the supplements and therapies that have been invaluable to my healing process, hoping they can help others on their TBI journey too.
Supporting My TBI Recovery Journey with the Right Supplements
In the photo below, you'll see some of my go-to supplements: Spirulina for detox, Lion’s Mane for brain health, Ashwagandha to manage stress, Body Bio PC for cell repair, and Citicoline to boost cognitive function. These powerful supplements have been key in my recovery, supporting both brain and body as I focus on healing. Each one plays a unique role in my recovery process, and I hope sharing these will help others navigating their TBI healing journey.

1. OM Lion’s Mane: Supports Brain Regeneration and Cognitive Function
Lion’s Mane mushroom is renowned for its neuroprotective properties. It stimulates the production of Nerve Growth Factor (NGF), aiding the regeneration of brain cells. This is especially helpful for addressing brain fog, memory loss, and cognitive decline often caused by a TBI.
How it helps:
Stimulates NGF production for brain cell regeneration.
Improves cognitive function, focus, and memory.
Reduces long-term cognitive decline associated with TBI.
2. Body Bio PC: Enhances Cellular Function and Protects Brain Cells
Phosphatidylcholine is essential for cell membrane repair, especially in the brain. Body Bio PC helps protect and restore damaged brain cells, support cognitive function, and improve memory—critical for anyone recovering from a TBI.
How it helps:
Supports cell membrane repair and brain cell regeneration.
Enhances focus, cognitive performance, and memory.
Protects the brain from oxidative stress.
3. Da Vinci Citicoline:
Aids Memory Retention and Cognitive Enhancement
Citicoline helps in the production of phosphatidylcholine, which is vital for brain cell membranes. It enhances memory retention and cognitive performance, aiding recovery for TBI patients by improving brain cell communication.
How it helps:
Enhances memory retention and cognitive performance.
Supports brain cell communication and healing.
Improves mental clarity and focus.
4. Pure Ashwagandha: Reduces Stress and Promotes Mental Clarity
Ashwagandha is an adaptogen that helps the body cope with stress, a major barrier to recovery after a TBI. It supports brain health, improves focus, and reduces anxiety, which is critical in the post-TBI recovery process.
How it helps:
Reduces stress and anxiety.
Supports memory and mental clarity.
Aids in mood regulation, essential for TBI recovery.
5. BioSuperfood Micro Algae: A Superfood for Healing
This blend of algae provides essential antioxidants, vitamins, and fatty acids, which support brain healing. It reduces inflammation and helps regenerate brain cells, making it a great supplement for those recovering from a TBI.
How it helps:
Reduces inflammation in the brain.
Supports cellular regeneration and tissue repair.
Provides essential nutrients for brain recovery.
6. DHEA: Hormonal Support and Neuroprotection
DHEA is a precursor hormone that plays a role in neuroprotection, memory, and mood regulation. It supports brain repair and cognitive function, making it especially helpful for TBI recovery.
How it helps:
Supports mood and cognitive function.
Boosts neurosteroid levels for brain repair.
Enhances energy and overall well-being.
7. Pregnenolone: Cognitive Enhancement and Brain Rebuilding
Pregnenolone supports memory, focus, and the repair of brain cells. It enhances neuroplasticity, which is crucial for recovery after a TBI.
How it helps:
Supports memory formation and brain cell regeneration.
Enhances cognitive stamina and clarity.
Promotes brain repair and healing.
8. BCQ (Boswellia, Curcumin, and Quercetin): Anti-Inflammatory Powerhouse
BCQ combines potent anti-inflammatory agents, reducing brain and systemic inflammation. Inflammation is a key barrier to TBI recovery, and BCQ helps combat this by supporting brain cell function and regeneration.
How it helps:
Reduces neuroinflammation.
Enhances cellular function and brain repair.
Supports overall recovery after brain injury.
9. Glutathione: The Master Antioxidant for Brain Detox and Repair
Glutathione helps clear oxidative stress from the brain, supporting detoxification and cellular repair. It’s essential for reducing inflammation and protecting brain cells from damage.
How it helps:
Reduces oxidative stress and supports detox.
Promotes immune function and mitochondrial health.
Improves cognitive clarity and recovery.
10. Mitochondrial Formula by Bioclinic Naturals: Cellular Energy and Brain Repair
This formula supports mitochondrial function and energy production, vital for brain cell healing and repair. It contains key nutrients like acetyl-L-carnitine and CoQ10 to support brain function and reduce fatigue.
How it helps:
Boosts mitochondrial energy production for brain healing.
Reduces oxidative stress and promotes cellular resilience.
Supports mental clarity and energy levels.
11. Omega-3 Fatty Acids: Essential for Brain Health and Mood Regulation
Omega-3 fatty acids, particularly EPA and DHA, are crucial for brain regeneration. They reduce inflammation and support memory, mood regulation, and cognitive function.
How it helps:
Restores healthy brain cell membranes.
Enhances memory and mood regulation.
Reduces neuroinflammation and supports healing.
12. Vitamin D & B Complex: Key Nutrients for Brain and Mood
These vitamins are essential for neurotransmitter health and brain repair. Vitamin D regulates mood and cognitive function, while B vitamins support nerve cell regeneration and memory.
How it helps:
Vitamin D promotes neurotransmitter health and brain function.
B vitamins support brain repair and memory.
Improves mood and reduces symptoms of depression.
