Did you know that you can roast, bake, and cook all pumpkin varieties? Have you ever wondered what the benefits are AND what each type is best used for in cooking or baking? Well, cool. This post is all about just that! Let's go big or gourd home!
Okay, all puns aside (yeah, right), let's address the difference between a pumpkin, a gourd, and a squash. So, in a lot of home living blogs and magazines that I have read over the years, I learned that the simplest way to keep this all straight is how you use the fruits and vegetables. Basically, pumpkins are for carving; squash are for baking/roasting/eating; and gourds are for decorations. And, this is a great way to keep it simple, but this is not entirely fact.
To break this down, pumpkins are a part of the Cucurbitaceae family, which stems (ha, "stems", that was a happy choice of words) from the Latin word Cucurbita meaning gourd. The Cucurbitaceae family are a vining plant that contains both fruits and vegatables like pumpkins, melons, zucchini, squash, and cantaloupe. So while not all pumpkins are squash, both squash and pumpkins are a part of the gourd family.
I hope that is clear as mud. Let's move on.

Long of Naples Pumpkin Squash
The Long of Naples pumpkin squash caught my husband's eye during a visit to a local pumpkin patch, thanks to its impressive size and unique color. Blue Hubbard Squash
The Blue Hubbard squash is incredibly versatile and a fantastic choice for both cooking and baking! 🎃✨
Taste and Texture
The flesh is super smooth and sweet with a slightly nutty taste. It's a tough squash to slice into, so make sure that you have a sharp knife. You may know this, but as I learned while working in a kitchen "a sharp knife is a safe knife"! You can rock the squash back and forth to help guide the knife through, but be careful. I have also seen other people throw there squash on the ground to crack, but I have never needed to, nor wanted to as it would get covered in dog hair, even if it was vacuuming day. Once roasted, the flesh transforms into a rich, buttery delight, making it perfect for a variety of winter dishes. Its sweet and slightly nutty flavor enhances any recipe it graces.

This guy is packed with nutrients from a high amount of Vitamin A, C, and B to manganese and potassium. It's great for heart health, eyes, and our immune system. Blue Hubbard is a win in the health department with its rich orange flesh. These vitamins and minerals support heart health, regulate blood pressure, improve vision, and strengthen bones, making it a powerhouse for overall wellness. 🥗💪
Cooking
To enjoy its full flavor, roast the Blue Hubbard squash until tender. Simply slice it in half, scoop out the seeds, drizzle with olive oil, and bake until the skin starts to pull away from the flesh. This squash can be incorporated into soups, purees, or even as a side dish to elevate your autumn meals.
I baked our Blue Hubbard and it turned out wonderfully roasted and sweet. To roast, I sliced the squash in half, pulled out the seeds, drizzled both sides with olive oil and placed the flesh side down on a silicone lined baking sheet. I baked at 350F until the skin began to pull away from the flesh and it was tender to the touch. This took about 1.5 hours. I added the roasted squash to my Chicken Noodle Soup recipe for the perfect fall variation to such a classic.
Discover the delicious versatility of Blue Hubbard squash and enjoy its numerous health benefits this season! 🍽️
